The Lever today announced a major expansion of its newsroom, following a series of blockbuster national stories that prompted a surge of new subscribers. The expansion reflects the success of The Lever’s unique reader-supported business model, built on a foundation of tireless non-partisan accountability journalism.

“Amid a very difficult boom-bust era for media outlets, The Lever is building something different - an independent news organization supported by a large and growing subscribership that wants politicians of both parties held accountable,” said The Lever’s founder and editor David Sirota. “I’m thrilled that our subscribers are helping us expand our operations and look forward to making an even bigger impact with original hard-hitting journalism that exposes corruption and shapes the national conversation.”

The hires joining The Lever’s newsroom are:

  • Lucy Dean Stockton (News Editor) — Lucy is a New York-based editor, researcher, and writer with a focus on climate and privatization. She previously worked at The Nation, More Perfect Union, and Insider.
  • Lindsay Ballant (Designer) — Lindsay is a Baltimore-based art director and designer who has worked in editorial design for nearly two decades. She has led art departments for The Forum, The New Republic, The Baffler, Foreign Policy, and Newsweek.
  • Jared Jacang Maher (Lead Podcast And Live Event Producer) — Jared is an award-winning writer and producer based in Denver. He has worked as an investigative reporter, features writer, and as a producer in TV, documentaries, and podcasts.
  • Keerti Gopal (Editorial Fellow) — Keerti is a New York-based journalist focused on youth climate action. She has worked as a Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellow and a Climate Initiative Cohort Fellow at the Solutions Journalism Network.

The Lever is an independent investigative news outlet founded in 2020 by David Sirota, an award-winning journalist and the Oscar-nominated writer on the film Don’t Look Up.

The Lever recently won the 2023 Izzy Award for outstanding achievement in independent media. The Lever also boasts a growing podcast network that features the weekly flagship show Lever Time, as well as The Audit and Movies vs. Capitalism.
