Corporate Accountability Reporter

Location: Washington, D.C.

Job Status: Full-time

Salary Range: $65,000-$85,000

The Position:

The Lever is looking for a diligent and resourceful corporate accountability reporter with a track record of delivering impactful investigative stories that shed light on how industries influence the political system. The D.C.-based reporter will use record requests, subject-matter expertise, and a deep well of sources to generate eye-opening investigative scoops and analyses based on the news cycle. They will be expected to be on location on Capitol Hill and in other government agencies to cover fast-moving events. They will also have the writing chops to turn their reporting into clear, compelling stories that break through the noise and facilitate change. As we head deeper into an election year, we’re not interested in Beltway gossip; we’re following the money to expose the backroom deals screwing over the American people.

Candidates with a history of groundbreaking reporting on money in politics, corporate influence, and corruption will be considered. The reporter will be expected to file roughly a story a week, with the opportunity to develop and deliver longer deep-dive reports. Applicants must be based in the Washington, D.C., area or should be willing to relocate there. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits including a generous health care stipend, office expense reimbursements, and paid time off.

Qualifications:

  • At least five years experience as a reporter, with at least three years on the money-in-politics beat.
  • A proven history of delivering impactful stories that deliver change.
  • Experience filing record requests, tracking political donations, and scrutinizing business records.
  • A strong grasp of what makes for a good Lever story.
  • A keen ability to track and respond to the ever-shifting news cycle.
  • Proven aptitude in hitting deadlines and filing clean and accurate copy on complex, highly scrutinized matters.
  • Comfort and proficiency in operating independently, while also working in harmony with a small team of hardworking remote journalists.
  • Commitment to The Lever’s subscriber-supported model and approach to accountability journalism.
  • The passion, imagination, and ambition needed to build a transformative news organization.
