🔫 A mass-shooting subsidy. Republicans’ upcoming social services-slashing budget bill includes a tax cut on the purchases of gun silencers, eliminating a $200 federal transfer tax. Silencers, which reduce the muzzle flash and sound made when using a firearm, have grown exponentially popular in recent years: The number of legally registered silencers in the U.S. increased 1,600 percent between 2010 and 2024. These tactical devices, which the gun lobby and industry-friendly lawmakers have justified as “vital [tools] for hearing protection,” have been linked to mass shootings and other high-profile gun crimes.
