South Carolina’s state-owned power utility, Santee Cooper, has introduced a new electricity rate for energy-intensive operations, including data centers and certain manufacturers, to make sure that their ballooning power costs don’t fall on other customers.
The new rate was unanimously approved at the public utility company’s board meeting on April 25. It will apply to customers requiring 50 megawatts of power or more and will be implemented on an experimental basis for four years before the board considers permanent implementation. While the new rate structure is focused on data centers, it would also encompass other large users like electric vehicle and battery manufacturers in the state.
