In a recent budget request first reported by Bloomberg, Justice Department officials said the elimination of a separate tax division — which last year staffed over 500 people with a $106 million budget — will offer “more oversight” after Republicans accused the federal government of politically weaponizing tax enforcement during the Biden administration.
