Buried deep in the Senate’s latest version of the budget reconciliation bill is a disturbing corporate handout that requires the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service to arbitrarily sell off millions of acres of federal lands in the next five years without any hearings or opportunities for public input. Advocates argue that well-resourced commercial interests — including fossil fuel companies — will have no issue out-bidding state and local governments for the land, which includes local parks, wilderness study zones, roadless forests, tribal lands, critical wildlife habitats, and big-game migration corridors.
