The company seeks to automate 75 percent of its operations using collaborative robots or “cobots,” according to internal documents. After more than tripling its U.S. workforce since 2018, Amazon is now preparing to offload the work of hundreds of thousands of would-be hires to the cobots — amounting to roughly 30 cents in savings on every item sold.
